Braces vs. clear aligners: choosing the right fit

December 2025

Braces and clear aligners can both produce excellent results, but they work differently—and that difference matters when you’re choosing what fits your life and your orthodontic needs.

Traditional braces are fixed in place, which means they’re working 24/7. They give us extremely precise control over tooth movement and are often the most efficient option for more complex bite corrections.

Clear aligners are removable and nearly invisible. They can be a great choice for many teens and adults, especially when convenience and aesthetics are top priorities.

The biggest aligner ‘secret’ is consistency: aligners usually need to be worn about 20–22 hours per day. If they’re frequently out for sports, snacks, or busy days, treatment can slow down or the fit can get off track.

With braces, the key is cleaning and food choices. Sticky and hard foods can break brackets, and brushing needs to be thorough to prevent white spot lesions. We’ll teach you everything you need to know.

Comfort is different too. Both systems come with an adjustment period. Braces can cause spot soreness after tightening; aligners can feel tight when starting a new tray. Either way, it should be manageable—and we’re here to help.

So which is ‘better’? It depends on your bite, the movements needed, and how you prefer to live day-to-day. At your consultation, we’ll evaluate your smile, show you options, and recommend the path that gives you the best long-term result (not just the quickest fix).
