Why Age 7?

By age 7, most children have a mix of baby teeth and adult teeth. This allows Dr. Graf to evaluate jaw development, tooth eruption patterns, and identify potential problems early — when they're often easier to correct.

An early evaluation doesn't mean early treatment. In many cases, we simply monitor growth and recommend the optimal time to begin treatment.

Signs Your Child May Need an Orthodontic Evaluation

  • Early or late loss of baby teeth
  • Difficulty chewing or biting
  • Mouth breathing
  • Thumb or finger sucking past age 5
  • Crowded, misplaced, or blocked teeth
  • Jaws that shift, make sounds, or are disproportionate
  • Speech difficulties
  • Teeth that don't meet properly or at all

Phase 1 (Early) Treatment

When early treatment is recommended, it's typically to:

  • Guide jaw growth and development
  • Create space for crowded teeth
  • Correct harmful oral habits
  • Reduce the risk of trauma to protruding teeth
  • Improve appearance and self-esteem
  • Simplify and shorten later treatment (Phase 2)
