More Than a Beautiful Smile
At Graf Orthodontics, orthodontics is about more than straight teeth. We consider jaw alignment, tooth position, gum health, bite stability, TMJ concerns, and airway-related symptoms when creating treatment plans.
The Health Connections
How Teeth & Jaw Affect Health
- Airway: The size and position of your jaws directly impact the space available for breathing
- Digestion: Proper chewing breaks down food for better nutrient absorption
- TMJ/TMD: Bite misalignment can cause jaw pain, headaches, and clicking
- Sleep: Narrow jaws and tongue position affect sleep-disordered breathing
- Posture: Jaw position influences head and neck posture
- Oral Hygiene: Straight, properly spaced teeth are easier to clean
Signs of Airway Issues
You or your child might benefit from an airway-focused evaluation if you notice:
- Chronic mouth breathing
- Snoring
- Restless sleep or frequent waking
- Daytime fatigue despite adequate sleep
- Dark circles under the eyes
- ADHD-like symptoms in children
- Crowded teeth or narrow palate
- Recessed chin or jaw
- Teeth grinding (bruxism)
Our Approach
If you are concerned about your or your child's breathing or sleep, we will refer you to one of our sleep physician or ENT colleagues for a full evaluation. Only a true sleep study can diagnose sleep-disordered breathing.
In some cases, your sleep physician may recommend orthodontic treatment to help alleviate obstructions to your airway. Sleep-disordered breathing is complex and multifactorial, and we act as one part of a larger team.
We consider your overall health — not just your teeth — when creating your treatment plan.
